Insurance Requirements For Travelers

Posted in Travel Emergencies on December 1st, 2008

Insurance cover is essential no matter how safe you might think you are from needing it.
Anything can happen to anyone at any time and it is the times that you decide not to have insurance cover that something is most likely to happen.

People on a tight budget often consider not paying for insurance thinking that the horror stories they hear about other travelers stuck in overseas hospitals with poor medical care won’t happen to them.

Everyone thinks it won’t happen to them but the fact of the matter is, it is happening to people all the time and you could be the next person needing assistance.

There are many options when it comes to travel insurance and you can get a policy that will suit your needs for a very reasonable price.

You can get free quotes on the Internet and with all the competition in the insurance market you should be able to get a good deal.

Apart from travel insurance you should also consider getting medical insurance and even cancellation insurance.

If you are taking valuables away with you on holiday you should also consider getting insurance for them too as they can be quite easily lost with all the moving about you will be doing.

While it is better to leave all your valuables at home if possible, it doesn’t cost all that much to insure them if you really must take them. Make sure that the insurance policy is for the replacement cost of the item rather than a set price that might not cover the current value.

There’s a rule with seasoned travelers that suggests you should only take away on holiday items that you can afford to lose, as then you will be prepared for the worst case scenario. If you can’t afford to lose it, leave it at home and you won’t be traveling with the worry.

Emergency Requirements

Posted in Travel Emergencies on November 7th, 2008

Just as you would expect to have minor emergencies whilst at home, you also need to understand that this can happen on holiday too, yet most people never plan for anything going wrong while away on holiday.

Depending on where you intend to be holidaying, you should consider what you might need and whether you will be able to get what is needed from the facilities that are available where you are going.

Even if there are places to buy the things that you might need, you don’t really want to add to your holiday expenses if you can help it, and by simply packing a small amount of emergency supplies in with your luggage you could save the time looking for supplies while on holiday and the expense of buying those supplies.

Think about the items you have needed in recent times while at home and whether you are likely to need them while you are traveling.

Maybe you are susceptible to cuts and should be taking some antibacterial cream with you.

Maybe you get hay-fever quite easily and need to take some antihistamine pills with you.

It might not even be medical conditions that cause these needs.
You might find that you are always searching for a pen and paper to write things down when at home and taking them on holiday might make your vacation a lot more pleasant and organized.

Tape, Velcro and other similar items could come in very handy while away to repair or contain items.

Obviously you will need to be realistic with what you should take as there is the question of having too much baggage to lug around.

You will need to weigh up the benefits of taking some of these items and leaving them behind at home to decide whether they are worthwhile.

Even having a pocket knife or torch can be very useful although you will need to be very careful where and when you have a pocket knife on you particularly with the increased security that abounds these days.

Taking Care Of Medical Needs

Posted in Travel Emergencies on October 15th, 2008

Make sure you have a handy bag to carry your medical requirements with you when traveling and don’t pack them with your main baggage that will go in the hold of the plane.

They could easily get lost and then you will have the dilemma of trying to get them replaced.

If possible take additional supplies and have them stored elsewhere so you have a backup in an emergency.

You should have a list of all the medical items that you are taking with you as it is often difficult to remember the names of medication when needed. Have your family doctors’ contact information on hand so local practitioners will be able to contact them in a hurry if needed.

You should also have all your insurance details handy if needed and any other details that medical staff might need to be aware of if you need their assistance.

Make sure that your medical supplies are all well labeled so the authorities don’t assume you are carrying illegal products in your possession.

The medical supplies you have from your country might be unknown in the country of your travels so they will need to know that they are legitimate supplies.

When you are in your hotel room lock your medical supplies in the safe with your other valuables as your health is more valuable than anything else you will be locking away.

If you will be requiring any special needs while away on holiday, or if you have an existing medical condition that can be the cause of concern, then you should check in advance of leaving that there are suitable hospitals, pharmacies or medical professionals that will be available if needed.

Once again the planning you do in advance of leaving on holiday will help to make the holiday a smooth and relaxed experience where you won’t need to be concerned with having forgotten anything that will be needed.

Motion Sickness

Posted in Travel Emergencies on October 3rd, 2008

Motion sickness can affect people who have never experienced it before.

Tiredness is one of the triggers for motion sickness with many people suffering more when they have had a lack of sleep.

When traveling, and in particular when the travel plans are hectic, it is often hard to get suitable sleep.
With the additional tiredness, comes an increase in the incidence of motion sickness.

This can affect people in all modes of transport from air travel to sea travel, road travel and even via rail.
Even if you haven’t been affected by this in the past it is relatively inexpensive to buy motion sickness pills and they certainly don’t take up very much space in your luggage do they?

Weather conditions can change quickly in many areas of the world and an expected smooth flight, or sailing, can quickly turn into a bumpy experience increasing the chance of feeling unwell.

Motion sickness will certainly put a dampener on the enjoyment you will have in your travels and the ability to control it with a suitable pill is a worthwhile investment to have in your travel pack at all times.

Even the foods that you eat have a bearing on whether you will feel unwell or not and whilst on holiday in uncommon destinations you are likely to want to try some of the local cuisine. You won’t know until it is too late whether it is agreeable with you.

Not all pills are suitable for everyone so, as with all your other planning, you might need to try them before you leave on your holiday to see whether the pill in itself could make you feel unwell and if so, change to another brand.

There are other alternatives besides pills such as wrist bands that apply pressure to specific points and these have proven to be very effective in reducing motion sickness.

Luggage Packing Techniques

Posted in Packing Techniques on September 23rd, 2008

You can carry a lot more luggage if you learn to pack it well. It can even allow you to have smaller bags or suitcases as you won’t need as much space.

Bulky items such as shoes can be used as storage containers to save space where you can pack smaller items, particularly soft items such as socks and underwear inside them.

The tidier you are at packing your clothes the more room you will have. It will also tend to keep your clothes in better condition with less creases and wrinkles.

Pack your biggest items first, such as bulky jackets and then pack in the smaller items around them to fill up the space.

A lot of clothing and items such as towels can take up less room if they are rolled rather than folded. It depends on the shape of the item and the type of materials they are made from but you should test to see whether your clothing and accessories might work well with this method of packing. Rolling clothes is also often a good way to stop them from getting creased.

If you have any hard boxes or bags such as camera or laptop bags you should consider using any available space for packing smaller items.

Make use of additional external compartments on your travel bags to store items as you will find that you will have more room by doing this rather than trying to get everything in the one main compartment.

It will also place less strain on the zips and clips on your bags if you pack in this manner and the last think you want to happen to your bags while away is for the zips to break thereby stopping you from securing your possessions.

Don’t leave for holiday with every inch of space fully utilized if you intend to do any shopping while away or you might have a nightmare trying to pack for your return trip.

Easy Clothing Care

Posted in Packing Techniques on September 8th, 2008

There are several techniques that will help you to manage your clothing while away on holiday that will see you remaining clean, tidy and without the need for the expense of Laundromats and dry cleaning services.

The convenience of your wardrobe will depend a lot on the type of clothes that you buy.
You won’t want to take with you clothing that will require dry cleaning when anything that will drip dry and look good will make life away a lot easier for you on holiday.

You can wash items in your hotel room shower and let them drip dry overnight. You can get wrinkles out of your clothing by giving them a fine spray mist of water, just enough to dampen them, and then let them hang until they dry and the wrinkles will be gone.

It is handy to have a little spray bottle with you, not only for maintenance of your clothing but also to cool yourself down if you feel hot or clammy.

This can happen just before a plane flight is ready for departure when they turn the air-conditioning off prior to getting airborne.

A light mist of cool water on your face can make you feel a lot more comfortable and relaxed.

When you need to wash your underwear you can do that by using the shower and washing them while you are having your shower and then leaving them to drip dry over night.

Another method to help get the creases out of your clothing is to hang them in the bathroom when you are having a hot shower or bath and they will get ’steamed’ from the heat. This will usually remove a lot of the creases and wrinkles and once again they will be ready in the morning after drying out overnight.

Take a few plastic bags with you on holiday so you can keep your dirty shoes and/or clothing off your clean clothes when you have to pack your bags to move to your next location.

The Small Things Make A Difference

Posted in Packing Techniques on September 1st, 2008

As with many things in life it is the small details that can make a big difference at the end of the day and this applies to travel also.

It is simple things like taking the time to clearly mark your luggage that can make the difference between losing all your possessions and wasting valuable holiday time and having a memorable vacation.

If you have ever lost your luggage while on holiday you will realize the huge inconvenience that it brings. Now consider how long it takes to add some easily identifiable tags to your luggage. In a few minutes you might have just avoided turning your holiday into a nightmare.

This applies to more than just your luggage.
It only takes a few minutes to implement steps that will ensure your money and other valuable possessions are as safe as possible.

Many of these small steps are also very cheap to apply.

A money belt can be purchased for a relatively small price. Tags on your luggage can cost nothing more than some brightly colored ribbon.

The cost of these items is a worthwhile investment in your holiday, much like having all your insurances paid up to date.

These are not the areas that you should be looking at cost cutting if you are traveling on a budget. There are many other areas where you can get bigger savings, such as getting more prices on airfares and accommodation.

If you can’t afford to look after your safety and wellbeing while on holiday then you might need to reconsider your travel plans because they are the two areas that need to be first and foremost in your mind when planning your vacation.

They are also the areas that will have the most affect on whether you enjoy your holiday or not.
You won’t remember the lovely views and amazing food if you have to spend your holiday trying to get your possessions back and all the lost time and money and the inconvenience that it will cause.

Safe Money Handling While Traveling

Posted in Holiday Budgets on August 18th, 2008

It is unwise to carry too much cash on you when traveling. Travelers’ checks are a lot safer and you should only cash them when you need more cash.

You should have a safe place to carry your cash and your credit cards, and certainly not in the back pocket of your jeans.

This is just asking for trouble as there are professional pick pockets that will be able to relieve you of your money and you will be none the wiser until you try to buy something and find there isn’t any money there.

You might need to buy yourself a secure money belt that you can wear around your waist and under your clothing to deter people from trying to steal from you.

Always lock your valuables in your hotel room safe or if there isn’t one there ask at reception if they have a place where you can lock up your valuables.

If you plan your spending correctly you will use up your last available local cash before departing and that will save you from having to get it converted back into your own currency and possibly risk losing money on the exchange adjustment.

Credit cards are very handy to have with you on holiday but be aware that you will be paying a fee each time you use them and when you draw cash out of your account.

Always be safe when using your credit card by not letting anyone see your pin number or by using key logging to find out what your number was and the passwords to your accounts when you use public computers in internet cafes.

There are many people who make their income from this sort of illegal behavior.

Use up all your coins first when you are trying to spend your cash before leaving as many places won’t exchange coins back into your own currency like they will with notes.

Unless you intend going back to the same holiday destination again you will be stuck with money that you can’t use and that is effectively a holiday cost for you.

Holidaying On A Budget

Posted in Holiday Budgets on August 17th, 2008

If money is tight then there are many other alternative holiday choices that you can consider where you will get to see the sights and experience other locations without breaking the bank.

Cheap accommodation can be found at back-packers hostels and in certain areas you can even use a tent for your accommodation.

It can be fun camping and it also offers the opportunity to stay at remote locations where other travelers don’t bother to venture.

If you intend doing this you will need to find out in advance if there are any dangers that you need to know about and whether there are any facilities that will make camping more comfortable.

For transport you might consider using a mountain bike or tramping provided the distances you intend traveling aren’t excessive.

You will need to be relatively fit for that type of holiday but at least you will be able to do so on a shoestring if you plan it well.

Group tours are also a way to save money where you can pay for the whole holiday package that will include all your accommodation, travel expenses and food.

While it might seem a lot to pay in advance these packages will usually save you a good percentage of what it would cost for you to make the same plans on your own.

If you do decide to go it alone then it will be helpful to get some local knowledge of where you are going before you arrive at your destination.

You need to accept that there will be a lot more planning involved if you aren’t using preplanned holidays and group holidays.

Your main cost will be your time in getting all the relevant information organized so that you aren’t wasting time when you are traveling as that can work out a lot more expensive in the long run.

The Effect Of Exchange Rates

Posted in Holiday Budgets on August 15th, 2008

With exchange rates changing on a daily basis and some of the changes becoming quite considerable in many countries, it will be necessary for you to remain informed as much as possible, as this can have a significant affect on the cost of your holiday.

There are many websites that offer real-time reporting of exchange rates for all the currencies and this will allow you to get some idea of how it will affect your budget.

As the larger economies of the world are the major influences on how the currencies of the smaller countries perform, there are a lot of factors that can change their direction and that can also determine whether you will be able to achieve all your holiday expectations if there is little room to move on your budget.

Prepaid and all inclusive holidays are probably the best solution if you are traveling to countries where the currency is vulnerable to change.

By paying for such a holiday, your expenditure will be fixed no matter what might happen to the exchange rate and the only concern you will have is for any additional expenditure that you plan on making outside of the facilities that are provided in the package deal.

For the additional expenses that you are planning on spending, you can buy foreign exchange prior to going away and at a time when you think it is at its optimal value.

You can only hope that you have read the market right for maximum benefits although there will probably be an element of luck in doing so.

If the currency rate is moving in your favor it could be better to leave the change of funds until the last minute and even buy your overseas funds at the airport just before departure in the hope that you will have a little more money to spend while you are away.
